Background of the Study

Workplace safety in healthcare institutions is a critical concern, as healthcare professionals are regularly exposed to hazards such as infectious diseases, needle-stick injuries, workplace violence, and poor ergonomic conditions. Ensuring workplace safety is essential for protecting healthcare workers and maintaining high-quality healthcare service delivery.

In Nigeria, workplace safety policies are often inadequate or poorly enforced in public hospitals, leading to unsafe working conditions. In Sokoto State, many public hospitals face challenges such as lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), poor infection control measures, and insufficient safety training programs. These issues compromise the health and well-being of medical staff, increasing absenteeism and reducing productivity.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of workplace safety policies in public hospitals in Sokoto State and suggest improvements to enhance the protection of healthcare workers.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the existence of workplace safety guidelines, many healthcare workers in Sokoto State continue to face occupational hazards due to inadequate implementation of safety policies. The lack of proper protective equipment, ineffective hazard reporting systems, and insufficient training on workplace safety contribute to unsafe conditions. This study aims to examine workplace safety policies in public hospitals in Sokoto State and their impact on healthcare workers.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of workplace safety policies in public hospitals in Sokoto State.

  2. To examine the challenges associated with implementing workplace safety policies.

  3. To recommend measures for improving workplace safety in public hospitals.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are workplace safety policies in public hospitals in Sokoto State?

  2. What challenges hinder the implementation of workplace safety policies?

  3. What measures can be taken to improve workplace safety in public hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Workplace safety policies significantly impact the well-being of healthcare workers.

  2. Inadequate implementation of safety policies contributes to increased workplace hazards.

  3. Strengthening workplace safety policies will enhance the efficiency and morale of healthcare workers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on public hospitals in Sokoto State, assessing the effectiveness of workplace safety policies. Data will be collected from hospital management, healthcare workers, and safety officers. Limitations may include restricted access to hospital safety records and variations in safety measures among different facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Workplace Safety Policies: Regulations and procedures designed to protect employees from occupational hazards.

  • Occupational Hazards: Risks and dangers associated with a particular work environment.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Gear used to protect healthcare workers from exposure to hazardous substances.
